Woman with shoulder painStatistically speaking, there is a very good chance you have chronic pain, had chronic pain in the past, or will have chronic pain in the future. There is a higher chance you know someone who experiences chronic pain SOMEWHERE in their body. If you are one of those people, have you been treated for that pain, maybe for years, and got no relief? Your doctor prescribed medications, pain killers, anti-inflammatories or otherwise; you’ve been through physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and sometimes even surgery, and yet your pain subsists. Sound familiar? If I told you that these are the perfect cases for hypnotherapy, you may not want to believe me. “It’s a physical problem” you’d say. “It’s not psychological” you’d protest. “It’s not all in my mind” you’d assert. And I would counter “All pain is in your mind – all of it.” Without your brain sending the pain signal through your nervous system, you would have no pain. Pain is the body’s way of warning you of physical danger or injury. When you put your hand on that hot stove burner, your brain initially lets you know you are in a dangerous situation (you may get burned). If you hold your hand there long enough to suffer a burn, your brain sends the signal that you are injured. Like a smoke detector warns you of the potential of a fire, but then stops the warning once the smoke is gone, so too should your brain stop the warning once the danger or injury is gone. The problem is our brains often continue to register the sensation of pain LONG after the injury is gone. Another fact you may find hard to believe is that pain very often has an emotional origin; that is, it is a physical sign from the subconscious that an underlying issue needs to be dealt with. Until that issue is therapeutically resolved, all you ever do is mask the pain (with medication, compensation, etc.) or force another, sometimes serious symptom to arise. Most people know that hypnotherapy is commonly and successfully used to help people stop smoking, or to lose weight, and it is truly great for that as well as many, many other issues. Fewer people know it is now commonplace to use hypnosis for medical and dental procedures, as well as childbirth, without anesthesia, but believe me; it is done all the time. Controlling and stopping chronic pain is yet another burgeoning area where people are becoming aware of the natural, simple, and cost-effective benefits of hypnotherapy. If you are suffering from chronic pain, or if you know of someone who is, perhaps it is time to consider the tremendous benefits hypnotherapy has to offer! Contact me for more information.
